Pathology

The department of Pathology works within the Research and Development organizations to ensure that strategies for the treatment and cure of disease are based on accurate analyses of pathogenetic mechanisms. Pathologists use their veterinary and medical backgrounds to integrate data from sources throughout the company into a coherent analysis of human disease.

The department is involved in both pre-clinical and clinical stages of drug development. In research, members of the department participate both as leaders and collaborators in the discovery, characterization, and pre-clinical development of novel products in the areas of oncology, immunology and angiogenesis. Pathologists and their staff are engaged in their own research within the Experimental Pathology lab using cutting-edge technology such as laser capture microdissection, tissue microarrays, and confocal microscopy. In clinical development, pathologists contribute to the identification of diagnostics and biomarkers for the success of targeted therapeutics and to the understanding of adverse events. Members of the department provide critical components of the documentation required for successful regulatory filings.

Core facilities within the department allow timely delivery of results of the highest possible technical standard.

  • The Anatomic and Clinical Pathology laboratories prepare and analyze thousands of histological, hematology and chemistry specimens that form the bases for interpreting pre-clinical and clinical studies. Tissue samples are stored in an extensive archive and studies are tracked through a custom-built laboratory information management system to facilitate follow-up experiments and to support new research.
  • The in situ hybridization lab characterizes the expression patterns of novel genes in normal and diseased tissues. Results from these studies guide researchers in the selection of potential new therapy targets.
  • The immunohistochemistry lab evaluates gene expression at the protein level in cell lines and tissues and screens novel antibodies for reactivity thereby facilitating the selection and development of therapeutic antibody candidates.
  • The Microscopy Core Laboratory supports and advances Research and Development projects utilizing methods in optical microscopy (confocal, deconvolution etc.), digital imaging and image analysis.

Members of the department regularly author and co-author peer-reviewed publications and present at national and international scientific meetings. The department has developed strong ties with academic and clinical groups both in the United States and abroad.

Recruitment The Pathology Department is comprised of a cohesive, hard-working, and motivated group of individuals. The pathologists and research assistants and associates come from diverse educational backgrounds that add to our overall expertise as a department. We frequently have openings for such collaborative individuals whose talents blend with, add to, and complement the group.
